For inclusion in a master's degree is the completion of studies at the Bachelor's level requirement.
The subject-specific entry requirements are set out in the current Aufnahme-/Zulassungsordnung (admission regulations).

The degree programme is divided into a compulsory and an elective area. Both areas are completed in four semesters with a total of 120 credit points. The following programme content is taught:

• Current and fundamental theories and findings on human experience and behaviour in the areas of judgement, decision-making, risk perception and behaviour
• Basic and in-depth knowledge of neurocognitive developmental psychology; comparison of typical and atypical developmental processes in the field of developmental psychopathology
• In-depth knowledge of central socio-psychological questions, theories and research approaches
• Central topics of behavioural genetics (e.g. quantitative genetics, molecular genetics, neurogenomics, disposition-environment interaction and covariation or the role of epigenetics in differences in experience and behaviour between people)
• Advanced methodological content such as psychometrics, change measurement and mathematical modelling of cognitive processes

In addition to the in-depth study of the basic subjects of psychology, neuroscience and selected areas of application (e.g. topics in occupational and organisational psychology, health psychology) are also offered on a modular basis. Students learn about the following topics, among others:

• Theories to explain and change health behaviour; behavioural science approaches to explain social differences in health
• Models and methods of social neuroscience including culturally, linguistically and diversity-sensitive approaches and study designs; neuroscientific perspective on social relationships and the perception of social signals from the other person
• Approaches to behavioural change from the behavioural sciences (nudging) or negotiation strategies

In preparation for the Master's thesis, there is a research project-related module in which students - after an introductory lab rotation in the various research areas of the working groups - familiarise themselves with a research area of their own choice in the third semester under the guidance of a working group at the Institute of Psychology. Here they can design their own research project. Alongside this, they familiarise themselves with a specific theoretical/methodological position in a scientific debating club and defend this (bearing in mind its strengths and weaknesses) against an antagonistic position.

The specialised study programme is supplemented by courses from General Studies. This allows students to acquire knowledge and skills that go beyond their studies and are tailored to their individual learning requirements, as well as to set their own areas of interest within psychology. Courses are offered in areas such as foreign languages, methods, diversity, ethics or trans- and interdisciplinarity.

The Master's degree programme provides a solid foundation of skills for all psychological professions. The aim of the Master's degree in Psychology is for students to have a sharpened sense of judgement with regard to general, social, developmental and behavioural aspects of human experience and behaviour and to be able to confidently identify and critically question similarities and differences between the various perspectives of the sub-areas. They acquire comprehensive skills in scientific work and are thus particularly well equipped to work successfully in research-orientated institutions. Students are prepared for a wide range of professional fields of application: from diagnostics to environmental counselling, market research, data science and coaching to health psychology
