For projects with cold atoms in space, ultra-high vacuum (UHV) systems are one of the key technology for a successful mission. These experiments are currently carried out in the drop tower and on sounding rockets and in the future on-board of the International Space Station (ISS) or on a satellite. In contrast to ground based experiments, these space based experiments need to withstand the mechanical loads during all phases of the mission, including the launch, the flight and the landing. In the framework of these missions, experimental tests and simulation based (FEM Simulations) approaches are currently under investigation.

The project includes the following tasks:

Experimental part
- Experimental investigation of UHV seals under mechanical loads
- Determination of material and engineering data
- Experimental investigation of pretension force of screw connections

Simulation Part
- Optimization of current FEM Model
o Mesh, material model, etc
- Verification of FEM model with experimental data
- Optimization of a post processing of the FEM simulation results
- Implementation of a automated post processing for a leakage prediction for future design optimizations
