Brexit: A Threat to Scientific Cooperation?

So it’s official: On March 29, the British Prime Minister, Theresa May, submitted her country’s notice to leave the European Union. Great Britain’s decision could pose a real threat to international scientific cooperation. This is the fear shared by the University of Bremen and its partners in the Young European Research Universities Network (YERUN). The network currently comprises 18 members in twelve different countries. Two of them are Brunel University and the University of Essex in Great Britain, with both of whom the University of Bremen has been closely cooperating in research and education for many years. In a joint press release, the YERUN network therefore calls for continuing British participation in EU programs and cooperation projects in post-Brexit times. Great Britain must not be excluded from the EU programs. “Excellent research can only be achieved in international collaboration”, says Professor Yasemin Karakaşoğlu. The University of Bremen’s Vice President Diversity and International is one of YERUN’s five board members. She adds: “Our longstanding mobility relations must not be allowed to suffer in the wake of such political developments”. European values must be upheld.

YERUN: The voice of young universities in the EU

The international Young European Research Universities Network (YERUN) exists since early 2015. The University of Bremen was among its founding members. The network, with 18 members in twelve countries, comprises universities that were younger than 50 when they joined. They are all included in the top 50 of the Times Higher Education (THE) rankings. YERUN sees itself not only as a cooperation network but also as the voice of young universities in the EU. It is currently chaired by the President of Universidad Carlos III in Madrid. YERUN has an office in Brussels.
