Doing Global Media Studies
Comparative Methods of Transcultural and Transnational Research (11.-12. October 2010)
On October 11-12, 2010, the ECREA preconference "Doing Global Media Studies: Comparative Methods of Transcultural and Transnational Research" is held at the Haus der Wissenschaft in Bremen, organised by Michael Brüggemann (University of Zurich), Andreas Hepp (IMKI, University of Bremen) and Katharina Kleinen-von Königslöw (University of Vienna).
'Global media studies' are an approach of media research which reflects the increasing phenomenon of transcultural and transnational communication: If we consider news or entertainment formats, the internet or mobile communication, mainstream or minority media public and private communication increasingly transcends national and cultural borders. But how can we respond to this methodologically? Which innovative methods are necessary for media and communication research in a globalized media world? What kinds of empirical research are required for "doing" global media studies?
This conference tackles the methodological challenges facing comparative media research in a global age, reflecting critically the present status of transcultural and transnational communication. The 23 presentations by leading experts from five continents will address and discuss the whole range of methods of global media research, from ethnography, network studies, text and visual analysis to large scale surveys and multi-level designs.
Sonia Livingstone (London School of Economics and Political Science) and Tristan Mattelart (Université Paris 8) have been confirmed as keynote speakers, the final talk will be given by Friedrich Krotz (University of Erfurt/Bremen).
