International Degree Programs

Key concerns within the degree of English-Speaking Cultures/English are the English language and its expansion and diversification in its historical and cultural context. Moreover, reflections on the role and various ways of representation of local literatures and cultures in the context of representation, process and critical engagement with the imperial past and the postcolonial present of transatlantic and global historical spaces in the English-speaking world across various media constitute an important part in the program.
The degree program encompasses the following components: Literary studies, language sciences, cultural studies and language practice. Students training to be teachers also attend courses in didactics of foreign language acquisition.

Attention: English-Speaking Cultures can only be studied in combination with another, German-speaking subject.

The international English-language Bachelor's programme Marine Geosciences deals with scientific aspects of the marine environment as part of the Earth system. The programme provides a profound understanding of the structure and processes of the seas and oceans as well as the solid earth and their interactions. Building on sound basic scientific knowledge, the Bachelor's programme in Marine Geosciences teaches and combines central elements of geology, palaeontology, petrology, geochemistry, geophysics, mineralogy and crystallography with a special focus on marine sediments and processes as well as oceanography. Its concept follows the modern understanding of the geosciences: geological processes are understood as components of the overall Earth system and are observed, described, analysed and modelled using scientific methods.  

The degree programme covers a broad spectrum of geosciences with a focus on marine topics. Equipped with a broad methodologically trained basic knowledge and deeper knowledge in three core subjects, graduates of the Bachelor can directly enter the profession or continue their studies in a further degree programme.

The subject of this degree programme are the sustainable use of resources and energy as well as the recording and description of processes and interactions in environmental systems from the disciplines of biology, physics and geology. The first two years of the program provide a comprehensive, solution-oriented basic education. Students deal with the topics of resources, the water cycle, energy, climate change and biodiversity. This is followed by individual specialisation with the choice of a focus area. During an optional semester abroad in the 3rd year, students can directly experience the international context of the degree program.

The bilingual master’s program in Applied Geosciences is suitable for students with an undergraduate degree in Geosciences. Its focus of study is on continental geo-sciences with topics such as hydrogeology, engineering geology, glaciology, geohazards, applied sedimentology, petrology or geophysics and renewable energy sources. In this bilingual program (German and English), students choose up to four specializations from a wide range of core subjects. A high level of practical relevance,  advanced field training and the use of relevant specialized software round off the range of competencies. Many cooperating research institutions on site participate in the teaching, such as Fraunhofer IWES, ZMT, MARUM, Senckenberg am Meer in Wilhelmshaven, and the Alfred Wegner Institute for Polar and Marine Research (AWI) in Bremerhaven.

The international Master’s program Artificial Intelligence and Intelligent Systems (AIIS) offers students a broad variety of research-based courses in a vibrant interdisciplinary environment benefitting from renowned researchers in the field of AI, cognitive systems, and robotics. AIIS students receive comprehensive training in theoretical, practical, and applied AI while specializing in “Cognition-Enabled Robotics” and “Machine Learning & Cognitive Systems”, choosing one of the two as major and the other as minor. Other features of AIIS are the Guided Research module – an independent student research project with individual supervision by a professor – and the Master Project module. Digitalization is changing the world around us. Datafication – the growing number of data that can be aggregated and processed in automated ways – increasingly becomes characteristic for our societies. As part of these processes, the role of media and communication devices and what we mean by media and communication studies is changing as well. The M.A. Digital Media and Society is situated at the leading edge of these developments. Its aim is to qualify students for media planning and decision-making positions in a datafied society.
Digitalization and datafication require that we critically rethink the role that media and communication devices play in our everyday lives. The in-depth analysis of these developments in different segments of society is a central theme running through the modules of the M.A: Digital Media and Society. In addition to the enhancement of critical and analytical thinking, a second core theme is to provide students with the required skills and knowledge to work in businesses, organizations and institutions dealing with aspects of digitalization and datafication.
The master’s program adopts an integrative approach, as we understand digitalization and datafication in their broadest sense and in their interrelations to society as a whole.

The 4-semester master degree course Digital Media, taught in English, is a joint program by the University of the Arts Bremen (Hochschule für Künste, or short HfK) and the University of Bremen (Universität Bremen or short UBremen). Students from both universities are required to cross over to the other university respectively and take classes outside of their focus, to combine theory and technology, art and science, design and informatics. Students do not only take classes at both institutions, they also have access to both institutions resources for a truly interdisciplinary experience. The course of study at HfK is called Media Design, it leads to a Master of Arts (M.A.) degree. The course of study at UBremen is called Media Informatics, it leads to a Master of Science (M.Sc.) degree.

The Master of Ecology is multidisciplinary and contains many innovative elements such as a mentoring program, integrated skills courses, supporting online material, scientific projects, and individual research training. This M.A. program is targeted at students with a background in English Studies, North American Studies, Linguistics (with English Linguistics as the main component), Comparative Studies (with a focus on English Linguistics or Literatures and Cultures in English), or related subjects. Courses are offered in English only. Students have the possibility of extending their previous studies within a highly flexible, research-based, and structured curriculum. Students may select their own specialization by concentrating on one of three profile areas:

1. British, North American and Postcolonial Literatures;
2. Linguistics: Varieties, Medialities and Applications (ranging over language variation and innovation, contact linguistics, multimodal linguistics, trans-, multi- and intermediality studies, as well as dynamic assessment and language testing); and
3. British, North American and Postcolonial Cultural History.

In addition, students are given specific training in advanced communication focusing on the use of English in the professional world, ranging over investigation, presentation and negotiation skills.

The English-language master’s program requires a university degree in Physics, Mathematics, or a comparable field of study. It deals with the diverse processes in and between the subsystems atmosphere, hydrosphere (ocean), cryosphere (ice region), solid earth (soil) and climate. Two of the leading research institutions in this field in Germany, the Institute of Environmental Physics (IUP) at the University of Bremen and the Alfred Wegener Institute, Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research in Bremerhaven (AWI), jointly undertake the teaching and development of the course. In the study program, physical, mathematical, and chemical relationships are applied to current problems in the research areas of the participating institutes.

The English-language master's program, which will start in the winter semes-ter 2022/23, prepares mathematicians ideally for future challenges by com-bining industrial mathematics and data analysis, e.g. in global hardware and software development, the creation and interpretation of complex climate models, the design of machine learning based on large amounts of data, or in the sensitive handling, analysis, and evaluation of data in financial services, trade, and health and social services. A bachelor's degree with at least 90 CP in mathematics and 24 CP in a technical application subject is required. In addition, English proficiency at B2 level and German proficiency at A1 level are a prerequisite. With a focus on applied mathematical areas, this interna-tional master's program, building on fundamentals whose core is the two-se-mester modeling project, offers the opportunity to specialize in the areas of industrial mathematics or data analysis according to individual and personal interests. In addition to the mathematical area of focus, another technical subject such as electrical engineering, geosciences, computer science, phy-sics or production engineering is studied. This master's program combines a practice-oriented mathematics education, which focuses on the mathema-tical modeling of technical and scientific problems in industrial mathematics and data analysis, with an education in a technical application subject at an international level.

This English-language master’s program is aimed at graduates of Political Science, Sociology, International Relations or comparable fields of study. It is offered by the Institute for Intercultural and International
Studies (InIIS) of the University of Bremen in cooperation with the private Jacobs University. It deals with the theory and empiricism of governance beyond the nation state in the context of ongoing globalization processes. The political science perspective on the phenomenon is leading. In addition, contributions from law, economics, history, and philosophy are also considered. There are no tuition fees beyond the semester fee.

The Master's program "Management Information Systems" (MIS) is designed for graduates of Information Systems and Management, Business Studies, Computer Science, Digital Media, Management and Production Engineering or related study programs. Essential entry requirements are knowledge of practical computer science (12 CP) and business management knowledge (12 CP). Languages of instruction are English and German. In the MIS study section, students learn methods for studying information systems and organizational transformation processes. In the MDI (Management Digital Innovation) study section, the focus is on understanding and analyzing the business implications of digital technologies for organizations. The INF (Computer Science) study section covers the processes of IT service management and models of software project management for data-driven decision-making processes in administration and business. A semester abroad can be taken in the second year of study. The main form of teaching is project work carried out in teams.

This English-language, three-semester fast-track master’s program is designed for graduates inBbiology, Biochemistry, Chemistry, Geosciences, Oceanography, Physics, (Bio-) Computer Science or comparable fields of study and is accredited with 120 ECTS. It offers a combined Master / Ph.D. program. After a theoretical and practical introduction in the first year, most students transfer to a Ph.D. program, which leads to a doctorate in three years. Those who wish to earn a master’s degree in addition to a Ph.D. write their master’s thesis in the third semester. Students address questions ranging from biogeochemistry to genome analysis and from microbial symbioses to bioinformatics. Materials Chemistry and Mineralogy is an international postgraduate study program covering application related topics ranging from raw materials to industrial products. The curriculum is divided into a general mandatory part and an elective part focusing on either chemistry or mineralogy. The mandatory part (42 CP) includes lectures and exercises in the fields of mineralogy, crystallography, chemistry (solid state and surfaces) and materials science, and a broad education in analytical methods. In the elective part (48 CP) special topics and skills in the field of materials chemistry or mineralogy are covered.

The research-oriented program across STEM disciplines requires a bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Computer Science, Geosciences, or related field. In ProMat, students themselves define the content of their curriculum, according to their interests and prior knowledge. They are involved in scientific projects at an early stage and introduced to international networks. Digital Media is an interdisciplinary course of studies concerned with both the theory as well as the application of planning, conception, design, technical implementation and evaluation of interactive multimedial application systems. Studies integrate aspects of media theory, media engineering, media science and media design. Besides the general foundation courses, students can choose between two main thematic areas: The program Media Design offered by the University of the Arts Bremen focuses on artistic and design aspects of the field. Graduates are awarded the title Bachelor of Arts (B.A.). Studies in Multimedia Engineering (Medieninformatik) offered bei the University of Bremen are focused on the technical engineering aspects. Graduates are awarded the title Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.).

Digital media have no borders. That's why it makes sense for students to leave their own university for a while in order to expand the horizons of their knowledge and learning abroad. The goal of the semester abroad is the authentic experience of international learning and research contexts in the field of work and application of digital media. Students majoring in "Medieninformatik" are required to complete one semester abroad. The stay abroad should last one semester and is normally scheduled in the fifth semester. The prerequisite is a C1 certificate in English, which can be obtained at many institutes in Bremen and Germany. This bachelor's degree course is concerned with English-speaking cultures and literatures, and with English language, language varieties, and language history, referring primarily to those of Great Britain, Ireland, the (former) Commonwealth countries (Canada, in Africa, New Zealand, and Australia), and the United States of America. The program includes the following components: Literary Studies, Linguistics, Cultural Studies, and Language Practice. In the teaching-oriented orientation of the subject, subject didactics is also added as part of the professionalization area. The courses are taught in English.

Central to the third year of studies is an academic exchange overseas of at least three months. That opportunity permits undergraduate students to experience and adapt to an international environment including the benefits of learning of other educational systems. Second year students who use their visit abroad for collecting research data should begin to draft their final dissertation in their chosen field of studies immediately upon their return.

Integrated European Studies are a multidisciplinary degree programme. It deals with the politological and cultural conditions which govern the driving forces of politics and society of Europe past and present (for example crises like Brexit or migration policy in the EU). Subsequent processes of current regional integration in Europe are analysed on this background. The main focus lies on the transformation processes in Eastern Europe, as well as the challenges confronting the European Union and its neighbours. Germany, Poland and Russia occupy a central position in this respect. Both area programmes, Political European Studies and Cultural European Studies have a geographic focus on Europe as a whole. Students are expected to attend courses in Russian, Polish, Spanish or French. The fifth semester comprises a compulsory semester abroad.

The International Romance Studies master’s degree programme prepares young scholars for careers in fields that require cultural mediation and a profound knowledge of and perspective on romance languages and literatures that reaches across Europe and beyond. The programme combines Francophone and Hispanophone studies with literary, film, cultural, and linguistic studies, and it incorporates inquiry-based modules and a mandatory stay abroad. A variety of international partnerships are ongoing and under development. Currently, the department has research and language programme exchanges or collaborations with thirty-six universities in Spain and Latin America, twenty-five in France and French-speaking countries, three in Portugal and twelve in Italy.

The master's program "Sozialpolitik" (Social Policy) offers an internationally renowned, two-year curriculum that enables successful candidates to enter into positions in international organizations, government administration, welfare associations or civil society organisations. A number of double degree programs embedded in the MA Social Policy have been developed with carefully chosen and long-standing partner universities.

The MA Social Policy provides its students with the opportunity to specialize in the interdisciplinary and European-oriented field of labor relations (“European Labour Studies”). Students get the chance to spend their third semester at one of our partner universities in the Master Européen en Sciences du Travail (MEST) program. MEST is an inter-university network of 14 European universities providing Master-level education in work and employment studies. After a successful completion of the program, students receive the international certificate „Master Européen en Sciences du Travail” issued by the Catholic University Louvain (UCL) in Belgium.

The semester abroad is integrated into the MA Social Policy. It is only obligatory if you choose certain majors - please contact the advisor listed below if you have any questions about this.

Modern societies are increasingly formed by social, economic and legal relations that exceed the traditional boundaries of nation states. Markets have outgrown systems of national regulation and international policy coordination. Transnational corporations and other cross-border organizations and networks interact in new patterns and set new standards of governance.

Study track A offers the possibility to spend the first semester abroad at one of the universities cooperating with Bremen or Oldenburg. The program therefore starts in another country and has to be planned accordingly. Estudios hispánicos binacionales

The two-year Double Degree Estudios hispánicos binacionales consists of the Bremen Master of Romance Studies International and the Máster Universitario en Lengua y Literatura Españolas Actuales of the Madrid University Carlos III, where all students complete their first year of study.

In the first two semesters, you will attend courses in literature and linguistics; in the second year, you will specialice in one of the two disciplines in which you will write your Master's thesis. With the exception of Bremen Module 10, all seminars are held in Spanish.

The European Master in Labour Studies and Social Policy is jointly offered by the University of Bremen (MA Social Policy) and the Università degli Studi di Milano (MA Global Politics and Society). Students spend the first year of their studies in Bremen and the second year in Milan and receive two Master’s degrees after the successful completion of all requirements.

► Comparative Public Policy and Welfare Studies
The MSc in Comparative Public Policy and Welfare Studies and the Master Social Policy (University of Bremen),  have established a Double Master Degree Program.
Students who take this double degree spend the first semester at SDU, the second and third semesters at the University of Bremen, before returning to SDU for their last semester.
The aim is to offer the student the possibility to immerse themselves into a different academic environment and be able to receive an additional certificate from one of the top ranked social science research universities in Germany.

The University of Bremen and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill offer the double degree "TransAtlantic Master Social Policy" within the Transatlantic Master's program. Students of the TransAtlantic Master Social Policy spend their first year of studies in Chapel Hill and come to Bremen for their second year.

► Education Policies for Global Development (GLOBED)
The Master in Education Policies for Global Development (GLOBED) is a postgraduate Masters programme (120 ECTS), taught full-time over 2 years and divided in 4 semesters (30 ECTS each).
Students shall start their studies at Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, followed by a semester that will contain elective courses offered by the University of Glasgow and the University of Bremen, provided that students will follow these courses at one university or the other. Students will start the third semester with an internship at our Partner Institutions or Associated Members and will do the fieldwork afterwards. Finally, students will write their thesis during the fourth semester, following the Winter School.

Master Astrophysics and Space Science (MASS)

The program Space Sciences and Technologies (M.Sc.) offers the Erasmus Mundus Master's program "Astrophysics and Space Science" (MASS) in cooperation with the Universities of Rome Tor Vergata, Italy, Belgrade, Serbia and Côte d'Azur, France starting in winter semester 2022/23. MASS students can acquire knowledge in remote sensing, space technologies, relativity and celestial mechanics within this program.

The binational double degree program “Transcultural communication” offers a joint program between the MA Transcultural Studies at Bremen University and the MA Communication Sciences at Kadir Has University in Istanbul.
