For inclusion in a master's degree is the completion of studies at the Bachelor's level requirement.
The subject-specific entry requirements are set out in the current Aufnahme-/Zulassungsordnung (admission regulations).

The degree program - offered on an interdisciplinary basis by the departments of Geosciences and Chemistry - aims to impart core scientific competences from various disciplines of the participating subjects and, in particular, skills and knowledge in the areas of production, analytics and characterisation of materials. In this way, fundamental, method-oriented and materials-specific aspects complement each other to form an integrative view of materials science and natural science issues.

In the first semester, courses on analytical methods and the fundamentals of the sub-disciplines of chemistry, crystallography, materials science and mineralogy bring all students up to the same level of knowledge. From the second semester onwards, the two profiles of chemistry and mineralogy are available for selection. The Master's thesis extends over the fourth semester and concludes with an oral examination in the form of a colloquium.

A professional internship is not compulsory, but can be a useful addition to your studies.

Students can spend one or two semesters abroad, obtained credits will be recognized provided this is agreed to beforehand.

Students may choose to organize stays abroad themselves anywhere in the world. Exchange agreements have been set up with four universities overseas.

Going out in the frame of Erasmus is possible with 12 partner universities in eight nations (details on http://www.geo.uni-bremen.de/page.php?pageid=555).

The range of courses includes lectures, seminars, exercises, internships and projects, which are combined in modules.

Examinations take place during the course of study and can take the following forms:

• written examination (45 to 180 minutes)
• oral examination (approx. 30 minutes),
• written presentation with lecture (20 to 45 minutes),
• project work with a report on the results,
• writing of practical protocols,
• completion of exercises (portfolio)
• term paper.

The program is completed with a 24-week Master's thesis and an oral colloquium of about 40 - 50 minutes.

The degree programme opens up numerous fields of activity for graduates, on the one hand in industrial sectors such as glass and ceramics, building materials and chemistry, waste disposal and landfill management, electronics, paper, paints, pharmaceuticals, steel and other material-related areas, and on the other hand in state and industrial institutions with laboratories for the analysis and characterisation of materials (e.g. materials testing offices).

The conception of the study program with the inclusion of freely selectable courses in the general studies area enables students to prepare themselves for their later professional environment according to individual requirements.
