The full-time chemistry course ending in Bachelor of Science (B. Sc.) provides a sound experimental and theoretical training across the entire range of classical subdivisions of chemistry (inorganic, analytical, organic and physical chemistry), as well as in biochemistry, theoretical chemistry and – a local speciality – in marine chemistry.

Subject areas include general, inorganic, organic, analytical, physical and theoretical chemistry, as well as bio- and marine chemistry. Core components deal with fundamental chemistry (terminology, theories, methods) and develop these from an experimental basis. Further modules comprise the fundamental chemistry-relevant competencies in biology, physics and mathematics. Electives chosen in the third year of the course from the research interests of the Institute of Chemistry contribute to the acquisition of in-depth knowledge.

Internships in the educational field focus on teaching in schools, during which observed and own teaching activities provide insights into schoolteaching and test one's own aptitude for the teaching profession. Within the framework of this career-related work experience students have to complete an orientation phase, a theoretical phase, and a teaching phase.

The career opportunities open to chemists cover an extremely broad field. They range from fundamental research at universities or research institutes (such as the Max-Planck-Institute or Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft) to the most diverse aspects of research, development and production in chemical and pharmaceutical industries. Further opportunities lie in environmental and biotechnological research, in sales, in production management and quality assurance, business consulting, public administration, patenting, in environmental agencies and not least in education. Besides employment in enterprises or public administration there are a number of other opportunities outside the fields of natural sciences and technology, e.g. science journalism, public uderstanding of science, public relations, political consultation or project management.

To acquire the qualification to teach at state schools, students must subsequently obtain a Master of Education postgraduate degree (M.Ed). This has to be followed by an 18-month period of practice teaching in school, which ends with the second state exam for teachers in Germany.

Supplementary/optional courses
