Applications from abroad

During the studies of industrial mathematics, students learn how complex problems from technology, industry, engineering and natural sciences can be processed and solved using mathematical methods. In the Bachelor's degree program in industrial mathematics, the foundations are laid for successful future practical applications. Essential here, in addition to the technical qualifications, is the ability to cooperate and communicate with experts from different disciplines. In addition to the general ability to work scientifically, to think and argue in a conceptual-analytical-logical manner, and beyond the development of diverse communication skills, the education in the Bacholer's program of indutstrial mathematics focuses on the following three main areas, as these correspond to the concept of industrial mathematics in Germany:

• extensive mathematical expertise specifically in the areas of mathematical modeling, numerics, optimization and scientific computing.
• development of and effective handling of computers and software, aided by studies in practical computer science.
• close connections to a technical application subject and obtaining more advanced technical and methodological knowledge from this discipline.

The bachelor's program comprises six semesters (i.e. three years) of studies, with the coursework divided into modules. For each successfully completed module, credit points (CP) are awarded, which measure the respective weekly hours studying and determine the weighting of the results of a module for the final grade of the bachelor's program. In total, the program comprises 180 CP.

In the first year of study, students receive training in the basic mathematical disciplines of calculus and linear algebra (two two-semester modules of 21 CP each). Subsequently, the basic training is rounded off with further modules on analysis and numerics. The knowledge acquired here is then applied in the proseminar, the modeling internship, and a first specialization course (of the student's own choice). In addition to the studies in mathematics, two computer science modules are studied in the first year. During the second and third year, basic training in the chosen technical application subject takes place, in addition to courses in the general studies area. In the sixth semester, the program is completed with a bachelor's thesis.

The main topics of study are mathematical modeling, analysis and numerics. The first individual focal points are set by the elective subject in the 5th semester and the bachelor thesis, a deeper specialization takes place during the subsequent master study program.

Students can acquire skills and knowledge in the following areas, partially in connection with specialized scientific courses, and partially in specialized modules:

• Presentation and lecture techniques,
• Project development,
• Methods of scientific work,
• Industry-relevant software tools,
• History of science and mathematics,
• Professions and professional practice.

A computer lab, work on smaller projects within a modeling lab and, if applicable, laboratory courses in the technical subject are mandatory.

In addition, students may complete a professional internship of several weeks to gain insight into future mathematical professional practice. During the internship, students should familiarize themselves with typical requirements of a future professional field; they should, in particular, use mathematical methods to work on problems relevant to the profession.

The organization of an internship and the choice of the company or institute are the students' responsibility. An internship can be carried out at home or abroad in any company or research institute that can guarantee an internship within the framework of the guidelines described here. An internship at a purely mathematical institute or department is excluded. To prepare for a professional internship, interested students are strongly advised to seek advice from the internship officer.

A stay abroad is possible after the fourth semester and before the final semester; under certain circumstances, the final thesis can also be written in cooperation with a foreign university, if supervision by a university lecturer in Bremen is ensured. The Department of Mathematics has a number of Erasmus partnerships through which semesters abroad can be organized; in addition, the university faculty has numerous contacts abroad that can serve as a starting point. Studies typically consist of lectures with accompanying exercises. Additionally, there are proseminars including presentation techniques, a computer lab and modeling lab as well as the bachelor's thesis. In the technical application subject, lectures and exercises may be supplemented by laboratory courses.

The course is divided into modules with accompanying examinations. In mathematics, these are mainly conducted as oral examinations, and in some cases as written examinations. To reduce the number of examinations, large modules (21 CP) are formed in the first year. An essential part of the program is the successful completion of exercises for the lectures, which serve as coursework. Other forms of examination include:

Industrial mathematicians work in various fields, especially in the research and development departments of industry, in software development or as consultants for information technologies and data processing; however, like mathematicians, they can also be found in various other fields.

The industrial mathematics degree program meets the professional requirements and the demands of companies very well: It is primarily interdisciplinary and practice-oriented, and in addition, competencies such as conceptual-analytical thinking, communication skills, the ability to work in a team, creativity and persistence are developed. Therefore, job prospects for  industrial mathematicians are very good. It is, however, difficult to project how the job market for graduates with a bachelor's degree will develop.

The bachelor's degree is usually followed by a master's degree program in industrial mathematics, which builds consecutively on the bachelor's degree. Transitioning to a master's program in mathematics or beginning an interdisciplinary master's program in which mathematical methods are necessary is also possible after completing the bachelor's program in industrial mathematics. Alternatively, the bachelor's degree can be used to start a career.

At the next step, a master's degree in industrial mathematics is not exclusively a possible starting point for a career in the above-mentioned professional fields. Due to the research orientation, the study program also provides the preparation for an academic career: With good and very good grades, the master's degree in industrial mathematics can be seamlessly followed by a doctorate in applied mathematics or in the natural or engineering sciences.

The  industrial mathematics degree programs are closely tied to the Center for Industrial Mathematics, whose declared goal and central task is to impart the modern mathematical methods of industry and science.

Students at the Center for Industrial Mathematics (ZeTeM) are trained early on and continually in modern mathematical methods so that they can implement these in solving technical and scientific problems. As part of their studies, they already begin to work on the research and industrial projects of the ZeTeM.

There are currently 14 full-time professors (incl. cooperative, junior and interim professorships) in the mathematics portion of Faculty 3, who together with a large number of research assistants cover the teaching in the degree programs in mathematics, math education, industrial mathematics and elementary mathematics. Additional instruction is provided by honorary professors, instructors from other subjects, and lecturers. The individual research groups can be found here.

The Center for Industrial Mathematics works closely and successfully with many companies, institutes and scientists from various branches, fields and countries. These contacts greatly enhance the Industrial Mathematics degree programs in many ways.
