Transfictional & Transgeneric (Bremen - Coimbra)

The network Transfictional & Transgeneric examines transfictional and transgeneric aesthetics, as well as inter- or transmedial, metaleptic, and mise en abyme forms, structures, and phenomena in literature, film, television series, and other media. Literature and other art forms can transcend narrative and poetic boundaries by breaking down fictional and media barriers and blurring the lines between genres and categories. This can be achieved by challenging established genre conventions, casting doubt on the ontology of characters and the stability of a fictional world, or presenting readers with unexpected situations, such as metaleptic ones, where they must devise interpretive strategies to solve the puzzles presented to them. We are interested in how lyricism, narrative literature, theater, series, painting, film, music, and poetry are combined to form new connections and create unexpected forms. These new forms can lead to new interpretations or hermeneutic paradigms and evoke metonymic, metaphorical, or allegorical structures that subvert the normative boundaries of what can be said or written and what must remain hidden or silent in a given time and space. An important element of this synesthetic spectrum is the phenomenon of literary or film figures "hopping": as they move through art, media, time, language, and culture, as well as from one political and historical context to another, they take on different forms and present different—perhaps new—potential for criticism or subversion.
