Linguistisches Kolloquium „Multimodalität“

4. Dezember 2015
Universität Bremen
GW2 A3.570

The notion and concept of multimodality deals with the analysis of all semiotic resources in an artefact. Ground-breaking works by Kress and van Leeuwen (1996, 2001) have pushed this concept as a new branch of linguistics and communication science, assuming that language is no longer the central semiotic resource in a text or artifact. Instead, communication and representation are complex patterns of images, gestures, sounds, music, etc., and their modalities can have similar functions to those of language without being language themselves. The concept of multimodality is thus one of the most influential theories of semiotisation and offers diverse approaches for the detailed analysis of meaning construction in media artifacts.
The colloquium wants to introduce this concept and its basic ideas and starting points and to give an overview of the diverse approaches. For this, it will feature talks by prominent researchers in this area and show opportunities for the application of this theory and field of enquiry.

The colloquium is partly sponsored by the Institute of Linguistics at Bremen University.

Information for students:
It’s obligatory for students in the Abschlussmodul to participate in one of the colloquia. Other students can gain up to 3 CP for their active participation and a Studienleistung. Please subscribe on Stud.IP.
