I. General Studies - Fachergänzende Studien des FB 08 (Sozialwissenschaften)

Die fachergänzenden Studien (General Studies) sind Bestandteil des wissenschaftlichen Studiums, die ca. 25 % des Bachelorstudiums umfassen. Dieser Bereich bietet Ihnen die Möglichkeit, über das Fachstudium hinaus, Veranstaltungen zu besuchen, die Ihren Interessen entsprechen. Zudem können Sie ein berufliches Profil bilden, indem Sie Fach- und Methodenkenntnisse anderer Fachrichtungen erwerben. Ihre persönliche Expertise kann Ihnen den Zugang zu einem Masterstudium oder den Berufseinstieg erleichtern. Außerdem können Sie die fachergänzenden Studien nutzen, um Ihre Fremdspachenkenntnisse auszubauen und zu vertiefen.

Die fachergänzenden Studien der zentralen Einrichtungen der Universität Bremen (Studierwerkstatt, International Office, Fremdsprachenzentrum, BRIDGE Existensgründungsinitiative der Hochschulen, eGeneral Studies, Career Center) sind im Veranstaltungsverzeichnis an oberster Stelle aufgeführt.

Die Bachelorstudiengänge des FB 08 (Sozialwissenschaften) legen in ihren Prüfungsordnungen fest, in welchem Umfang fachergänzende Studien (General Studies) im Wahl- und Wahlpflichtbereich anerkannt werden. Bitte lesen Sie Ihre Prüfungsordnung genau. Und beachten Sie den Studienplan Ihres Studiengangs.

Doch wie entscheiden Sie, welche fachergänzenden Studien für Sie richtig und sinnvoll sind? Woran orientieren Sie sich dabei?

Bevor Sie darüber nachdenken, sollten Sie sich folgende Fragen beantworten: Welche Ziele will ich im Studium und darüber hinaus erreichen? Wie kann ich die Anforderungen im Fachstudium erfolgreich bewaeltigen? Was will ich nach dem Studium beruflich machen? Wo möchte ich mich beruflich engagieren? Wie kann ich erkennen, was meine Stärken sind? Wie finde ich heraus, ob ich für meinen Traumberuf ausreichend qualifiziert bin? Was muss ich wissen, um ein anspruchsvolles Praktikum zu finden? Wie kann ich herausfinden, was in einem Praktikum von mir erwartet wird?

Wenn Sie sich ernsthaft mit diesen Fragen beschäftigen, werden Sie merken, dass Sie einen Lernprozess beginnen, den Sie selbst aktiv steuern. Sie übernehmen die Verantwortung für Ihre berufliche Zukunft. Sie sortieren das Studienangebot der Universität Bremen bzw. des FB 08 nach ihren eigenen Kriterien – zumindest für den Bereich fachergänzende Studien (General Studies).

Das Zentrum Studium und Praxis des FB 08 unterstützt Sie gerne bei der Beantwortung Ihrer Fragen. Nehmen Sie dafür bitte die Sprechzeiten wahr.

Darüber hinaus können Sie in der Stud.IP Dauerveranstaltung \"PraxisForum FB 8\" aktuelle Praktikumsangebote, Ausschreibungen für Hilfskraftstellen und Stellenangebote für Absolvent(en)innen herunterladen. Die Absolventenstellen sollen aufzeigen, wo Sozialwissenschaftler/innen gesucht werden. Sie dienen als Orientierung für die Klärung Ihrer beruflichen Vorstellungen.

Seventy percent of the earth surface is covered by oceans and a great majority of humanity lives in the coastal zone. Our planet is reaching or has passed planetary boundaries that delimit how current and future humanity can live. Conflicts in the ocean and coastal realm are on the increase. In line with this, global sustainability research is now strongly focussing on ocean conflicts and crises. This block seminar examines the potentials of currently operating and very recently finished global sustainability research projects in the ocean and coastal realm. We ask: What ocean and coastal conflicts are there? How do they arise and what are their major drivers and outcomes? How do we currently study this and what does these approaches imply for our results? What conflict management tools and strategies exist and what are their results? Last, but not least, we critically examine the intention of current ocean conflict research to transform ocean conflicts into opportunities for sustainability enhancing interactions (Tafon et al, 2021). The seminar aims to convey knowledge surrounding natural resource conflicts in the Anthropocene and identify current knowledge gaps.
The course will be in English. There will be contributors from a number of currently ongoing global sustainability research projects. Participants may contribute on a topic of their choice on an individual or group basis.

This course provides an introduction to Quality of Life and Well-Being research, with the focus on Work-Life Balance (WLB). WLB has emerged as an important aspect of quality of life in European societies over the last decades. There are rising expectations among working people to be able to participate in employment and care and to have more time for leisure, friends, and family life. Yet, the pressure and intensity of work demands are increasing as well as the number of insecure and precarious jobs. In this course, we will review current trends in employment in Europe and theories that address employment relations, work-family interface and work-life balance.

This seminar will address the relationship between social class and gender-based forms of stratification in modern societies and in historical perspective. Overall, the question of interest is why the inequalities at the intersection of class and gender in paid and unpaid work persist across industrialized societies despite some impressive policy achievements over the past half century. The primary literature source will be the book “Gender-Class Equality in Political Economies”. In this book, Lynn Prince Cooke places gender inequality in a context that is historically shaped by the intersections of multiple inequalities and the particularities of six countries: Germany (East and West), Spain, Australia, the UK and the US. Gender-class inequalities persist in paid work hours, wages, and the division of housework. The study shows how values, choices, and behaviors of individual men and women in various national contexts are enabled and constrained by state policies that effectively structure relative group advantage and disadvantage from birth through old age.

Digital platforms are mediating ever more areas of social life. Platforms organize how we make and stay in contact with friends or find intimate partners, they curate our cultural experiences and regulate the presentation of self, they organize work and cultivate consumption. Platforms, however, are not only mediators. They are also observers and valuators. While we live our lives on platforms, algorithms observe our behavior, calculate our preferences and make decisions that influence our life chances, from suggesting potential partners to exluding content or even users from these platforms. In this seminar, we will take a close look at the ways in which platforms transform contemporary society and interpret them drawing on sociological theory and theories of society. Readings and discussions in class will be in English; active participation is expected.

The European Union is defined as a legal community. In fact, law and courts have fundamentally shaped and continue to shape European integration. This undergraduate seminar addresses students that wish to understand how and why law and courts matter for the polity, politics and policy of the EU. In the first section of the course, we will critically examine the purported function of courts, such as resolving disputes or enforcing legal norms. We will then turn to the role of the supranational European Court of Justice and its interaction with ordinary courts in the Member States, reflecting on the importance of their interaction for constructing a legal order in the EU. Subsequently, we will deal with the role of constitutional courts and reflect on the delicate balance between EU law and constitutional law. In a next step, we will discuss the emergence of a so-called European constitutional network composed of national constitutional courts, the CJEU and the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR). In a final section of this course, we will apply the acquired knowledge to constitutional politics and the current crisis of the rule of law in selected EU Member States.

Is Europe a happy family of nations? Or have there always been unequal power relations, legacies of conquest, and postcolonial resentments, both within Europe and in relation to the wider world?

This course explores the latter possibility, acting both as an introductory to postcolonial theory and dependency studies, and as an exploration of Europe’s internal and external colonialisms. Students will be introduced to classic postcolonial thinkers from the global South, such as Edward Said and Frantz Fanon, whose critiques of European imperialism and western discourse laid the foundations for further critical reflections on global colonial legacies. We will also explore the imperial legacies of individual western European nations and their dominant representations of imperial history, as well as the implication of the EU as a supranational body in the legacies of imperialism.

Debates around colonial relations along Europe’s east-west axis will also be studied in depth: is the very notion of ‘eastern Europe’ an ‘intellectual project of demi-Orientalization’, as Larry Wolff has argued? Moreover, was the Soviet Union a colonial empire, and how did the fall of state socialism in 1989/91 affect the region and its dependencies?

Overall, the course will offer a multiperspectival overview of postcolonial approaches to European identities and cultures.

By the end of the of the course, students should be able to:

- discuss critically the foundational ideas of postcolonial theory;
- apply postcolonial methods of analysis to works of literature, film and art, historical sources, political acts and speeches, etc.;
- critically examine Europe’s past in relation to the history and legacies of imperialism;
- analyse east-west divisions in Europe in terms of historical and present-day tensions.

The seminar introduces students to the most influential International Relations theories of the past fifty years. It does so by providing a critical overview of the approaches and concepts from the third and the fourth of the so-called ‘Great Debates’ in the study of world politics. It will be discussed, for each of these theoretical frameworks, which actors are perceived to be influential in international relations, how these interact with institutions, and how this interaction brings forth global governance. Particular attention will be paid to why it was deemed necessary to replace the theories and concepts from the third Great Debate with those from the fourth, and whether these later frameworks are satisfactory. Although the seminar focuses on theory, empirical applications and examples will be offered and discussed every week, including some of the most pressing international issues of today, such as climate change, development aid, and European integration. Finally, the students will be introduced to a theory that has been developed in anthropology and political science, and will critically assess whether this approach can help overcome some of the alleged weaknesses of the approaches from the fourth Great Debate.

The seminar traces the origins of modern internationalism and the emergence of modern international relations from (European) Early Modern Times to the contemporary period. It links the study of political and social movements trying to reform society and politics through transnational cooperation to the process of internationalizing cultural, political, and economic practices. The historical perspective reveals the increasing, yet ambivalent transnational linking of societies. The tension between globalization and fragmentation will be studied in various areas, including the formation of states, colonialism, consumer culture, peace movements, governmental organizations, and transnational corporations. The seminar provides students with a critical understanding of the making of today’s international world. A secondary objective is to familiarize students with some main schools of thought in history as an academic discipline such as social history, conceptual history, and global history.

The purpose of the seminar is to learn from classic and contemporary texts of modern social theory. By studying those texts, we can elaborate concepts concerning fundamental characteristics of social developments and adapt them for the analysis of contemporary societal problems. By combining distinguished and contradictory perspectives, we will focus on those achievements which prepare a better understanding and explanation of long-term developments that are of extreme importance also for challenges of governance and social change in the 21st century. Topics for discussion include the methodological status of social theory, different characterizations of modern society (in particular capitalist society), the relation of agency and structure, power and hegemony, the critique of certain features of modern society, and the relevance of the categories of race and gender. The seminar will serve as a general introduction to modern social theory – it does not require any previous knowledge of this field, but the willingness to engage with theoretical texts and their sometimes complex arguments.

The seminar aims to introduce students to the logic of inquiry in International Relations (IR) and other social sciences. At the same time, it seeks to prepare the ground for subsequent, more advanced courses in the methodology component of the program. The focus of the seminar is on learning about and discussing methodological principles and rules that, if properly applied, increase the probability of achieving valid and relevant results in studying world politics. The seminar deals with questions such as the following: What are the features of a good research design? Which research questions are worth studying? What is a theory? How can we build and test theories? What is a scientific explanation? In addition, the seminar looks at some problems of the philosophy of social science. Thus, it will examine the debate between “naturalists”, who argue that social science is about explaining collective human behavior in an “objective” manner, and “interpretivists”, who argue that social life can only be understood from within the social world. Throughout the focus is on “positive” research seeking to ascertain facts and accounting for them, in a division of labor with other seminars in the program that pay more attention to normative issues and methodologies.

This seminar discusses the most salient issues in war and peace studies. We deal first with theories on the causes and conduct of war and peace, ranging from classics to recent contributions. We also look at war and peace from the perspective of different IR theories. We then proceed to issues of research, and both quantitative and qualitative methods. Another major topic is what happens during contemporary wars and conflicts. We discuss military organization, political economies, identities, state formation, and violence. The last few sessions are dedicated to peacemaking in theory and practice. As an option, the seminar can also include case analyses of ongoing major armed conflicts. An emphasis is put on the discussion of methods and theories. In term papers, students shall link their own thematic interest with common ideas and debates in IR and conflict studies. Generally, our sessions will consist of structured discussions of the mandatory readings. These debates will be supplemented by short inputs by the instructor as well as students’ presentations.

The purpose of the seminar is to explore the place of legislation in international law within the context of global governance. Questions the seminar wants to explore are: Where does international law come from? Who were the main actors of public international law in the past? Who are the main actors today? To what extent does public international law contribute to the solution of international conflicts? The first part of the seminar looks at interpretations of the role and function of public international law as offered in scholarly reflections of public international law and by theories of international relations. The second part focuses on the different makers of public international law. The third part is devoted to special areas that illustrate international law-making as part of international political processes: The development of international trade law within the framework of the World Trade Organization, the call to legalize so-called third generation human rights, and the attempts to translate sustainability into law are examples for analysis.

The seminar deals with the ethical dimension of world politics. At the beginning, students are introduced to moral and political philosophy as well as to the most important schools of thought in international ethics. Next, we will look at human rights, which are often viewed as guiding principles for international action and institutions, addressing both their (in)compatibility with broader views in contemporary political theory and the clash between the claim to universality inherent in human rights and the fact of cultural diversity. Subsequently, the seminar focuses its attention on a range of more specific problems, each viewed from a normative perspective: the ethics of force and coercion (including intervention) in international politics; the nature and scope of distributive justice at the international and transnational levels (including the problem of intergenerational justice that comes into play in such issues as climate change); and the moral requirements of the global polity. In conclusion, the seminar will deal with the fundamental question of the proper scope of morality in international relations.

This course provides an overview of qualitative research methodology and methods, and it will provide students with hand-on knowledge of techniques they may want to apply in their own research. The social sciences have come into existence as a distinct field of scientific inquiry at the beginning of the 20th century. Since then, the qualitative/quantitative distinction has become a productive methodological divide. In this course, students will be introduced to the assumptions underlying qualitative research, issues of design and sampling, methods for data collection and analysis, and criteria for evaluation. Special attention will be paid to data collection and data analysis. By the end of this seminar, students should have gained: (i) familiarity with qualitative empirical research, its most important assumptions and basic concepts; (ii) knowledge of five major approaches in qualitative research (narrative, phenomenological, grounded theory, case studies, and ethnographic) as well as several data collection and data analysis techniques; (iii) an ability to select a suitable research design and methodology depending on the research question and to conduct an empirical qualitative research project; and (iv) an ability to evaluate qualitative research and reflect upon quality criteria.

Parenthood (or the pursuit thereof) remains one of the defining aspects in the lives of many individuals and couples across Europe. At the same time, voluntarily childlessness is on the rise in a number of EU countries, driven e.g. by changing lifestyles but also considerations about climate change. The understanding of parenthood and its different facets differs across the European societies. In this seminar, we will rely on an interdisciplinary approach and perspectives from different policy fields to address – among others – the following questions:
• What fertility rates and the resulting demographic trends can be observed across Europe?
• How do national regulatory frameworks approach parenthood? Who – according to the national laws – has the ‘right’ to become a parent in different countries? Which groups are encouraged and discouraged to have children? (e.g. heterosexual couples? Same-sex couples? Ethnic minorities?)
• If faced with infertility, which ways to parenthood (e.g. assisted reproductive technologies, surrogacy) are seen as acceptable and financially supported by public policies?
• What are the social characteristics of individuals who decide to have children?
• Once pregnant, what type and quality of care can women expect from the public healthcare system? Where can they give birth and how? Which professionals will assist them?
• Once the child is born, who is expected to take care of it, and who actually does? Which public policies are put in place to support parents? Can parents rely on maternal, paternal and parental leaves? How long and how generous are these leaves? Can the parents count on access to public childcare? Do they receive financial support?
• How different factors (e.g. culture, religion, historical legacies, ethno-nationalist ideologies) influence these norms and policies?
• How do these norms and policies seem to be affecting fertility rates and demographic trends in Europe?
The seminar is organized in monthly block meetings and will take place online via zoom. Readings and course material will be made available on Stud.IP.
Depending on their needs, individual students can earn between 3 and 9 ECTS for the seminar. The course requirements will be adjusted accordingly.

One of the most recognizable examples of morality policy regulation, the issue of access to abortion remains controversial in most societies. It has been sparking popular mobilization in Europe and the Americas, engaging both pro-abortion as well as anti-abortion activists. While most countries have pursued a road to permissiveness in the last decades (Nebel and Hurka 2014), including Ireland and Argentina, some countries (like Poland) and US states (like Arkansas and Texas) have re-introduced restrictions on access to abortion, effectively banning the procedure (see Calkin and Kaminska 2021). Moreover, countries have displayed different policy responses to the COVID pandemic: in some national contexts access to abortion has been alleviated while other countries have imposed restrictions.

In this seminar, we will discuss the issues behind morality policy regulation. We will examine how access to abortion has been regulated in selected European and South-American countries as well as in the US, by tracing the developments in abortion governance in comparative perspective.
We will look into the role of different factors and actors in liberalizing and restricting access to abortion: courts, social movements, health professionals, religious institutions (mainly Catholic Church), and – in historical perspective – of the communist and fascist ideologies. Transnational aspects, including cross-border abortion trails and the role of transnational organizations and networks in providing and restricting access to abortion, will also be considered. Finally, we will discuss how the COVID pandemic influenced access to abortion, both within and across national borders.

The European Union is defined as a legal community. In fact, law and courts have fundamentally shaped and continue to shape European integration. This undergraduate seminar addresses students that wish to understand how and why law and courts matter for the polity, politics and policy of the EU. In the first section of the course, we will critically examine the purported function of courts, such as resolving disputes or enforcing legal norms. We will then turn to the role of the supranational European Court of Justice and its interaction with ordinary courts in the Member States, reflecting on the importance of their interaction for constructing a legal order in the EU. Subsequently, we will deal with the role of constitutional courts and reflect on the delicate balance between EU law and constitutional law. In a next step, we will discuss the emergence of a so-called European constitutional network composed of national constitutional courts, the CJEU and the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR). In a final section of this course, we will apply the acquired knowledge to constitutional politics and the current crisis of the rule of law in selected EU Member States.

This seminar will address the relationship between social class and gender-based forms of stratification in modern societies and in historical perspective. Overall, the question of interest is why the inequalities at the intersection of class and gender in paid and unpaid work persist across industrialized societies despite some impressive policy achievements over the past half century. The primary literature source will be the book “Gender-Class Equality in Political Economies”. In this book, Lynn Prince Cooke places gender inequality in a context that is historically shaped by the intersections of multiple inequalities and the particularities of six countries: Germany (East and West), Spain, Australia, the UK and the US. Gender-class inequalities persist in paid work hours, wages, and the division of housework. The study shows how values, choices, and behaviors of individual men and women in various national contexts are enabled and constrained by state policies that effectively structure relative group advantage and disadvantage from birth through old age.

While it is often argued that highly skilled workers benefit from increasing demand for their expertise as it cannot easily be replaced by IT solutions, there is growing concern regarding the future of medium-skilled jobs, often performed in established sectors that provide stable and decently paid jobs. At the same time, digital change can lead to a further flexibilization of work by way of an increasing role of online platforms, questioning the very notion of employment relationships and increasing competition for paid jobs. This seminar will disentangle the many aspects of digital change and their role in shaping jobs and skills requirements. It pays particular attention to the capacities of different welfare states and training systems to adapt so that transitions to jobs less at risk of automation can be achieved. This has major implications for vocational training, adult learning and labor market policies, often defined as the main branches of social investment.

This course provides an introduction to Quality of Life and Well-Being research, with the focus on Work-Life Balance (WLB). WLB has emerged as an important aspect of quality of life in European societies over the last decades. There are rising expectations among working people to be able to participate in employment and care and to have more time for leisure, friends, and family life. Yet, the pressure and intensity of work demands are increasing as well as the number of insecure and precarious jobs. In this course, we will review current trends in employment in Europe and theories that address employment relations, work-family interface and work-life balance.

This seminar will address the relationship between social class and gender-based forms of stratification in modern societies and in historical perspective. Overall, the question of interest is why the inequalities at the intersection of class and gender in paid and unpaid work persist across industrialized societies despite some impressive policy achievements over the past half century. The primary literature source will be the book “Gender-Class Equality in Political Economies”. In this book, Lynn Prince Cooke places gender inequality in a context that is historically shaped by the intersections of multiple inequalities and the particularities of six countries: Germany (East and West), Spain, Australia, the UK and the US. Gender-class inequalities persist in paid work hours, wages, and the division of housework. The study shows how values, choices, and behaviors of individual men and women in various national contexts are enabled and constrained by state policies that effectively structure relative group advantage and disadvantage from birth through old age.

Digital platforms are mediating ever more areas of social life. Platforms organize how we make and stay in contact with friends or find intimate partners, they curate our cultural experiences and regulate the presentation of self, they organize work and cultivate consumption. Platforms, however, are not only mediators. They are also observers and valuators. While we live our lives on platforms, algorithms observe our behavior, calculate our preferences and make decisions that influence our life chances, from suggesting potential partners to exluding content or even users from these platforms. In this seminar, we will take a close look at the ways in which platforms transform contemporary society and interpret them drawing on sociological theory and theories of society. Readings and discussions in class will be in English; active participation is expected.

Digital technologies increasingly affect the content of individual jobs as well the structure of employment in European labor markets. While it is often argued that highly skilled workers benefit from increasing demand for their expertise as it cannot easily be replaced by IT solutions, there is growing concern regarding the future of medium-skilled jobs, often performed in established sectors that provide stable and decently paid jobs. At the same time, digital change can lead to a further flexibilization of work by way of an increasing role of online platforms, questioning the very notion of employment relationships and increasing competition for paid jobs. This seminar will disentangle the many aspects of digital change and their role in shaping jobs and skills requirements. It pays particular attention to the capacities of different welfare states and training systems to adapt so that transitions to jobs less at risk of automation can be achieved. This has major implications for vocational training, adult learning and labor market policies, often defined as the main branches of social investment.
Important notes:
The seminar takes place on 21 October, 11 November, 9 and 16 December, 13 and 20 January, with alternating online and offline sessions.
21 October (12-14h), 9 December (12-18h) and 13 January (12-18h) are online, 11 November (12-16h), 16 December (12-18h) and 20 January (12-16h) are in-person at Socium.
There will be short individual zoom talks before the first session (i.e. in mid-October).

“The workplace is the most important environment for most people’s health, whether it is a home, office, factory or forest.” (Kjellström 2007)

“Social” sustainability is one of three global goals noted in the Rio Convention 1992 by the UN World Commission of Environment and Development. Economic sustainability is a booster of change for the modern organisation; ecological sustainability remains a constant task, while social sustainability is less regarded in the everyday workplace. Statistics since 2005 show alarming figures concerning the well-being and health of working people world wide. Therefore, it is important to understand how organisational structures and the individual’s processing and coping are interlinked.
This training-seminar is bridging sociological and psychological knowledge, focussing on concepts that support an understanding of how organisations and their role actors can shape a workplace “socially sustainable”. We will explore the psychological effects of the quality of a social climate, in order to understand social vulnerability. We scrutinize effects of socially anti-sustainable workplaces marked by problems as work addiction, burnout and mobbing, and sustainability supporting approaches like occupational health management, work-life-blending, and how to deal with digital stress. Ethics and responsibilities become apparent.
English is used as a lingua franca; effects of this setting are part of the reflection within the training setting. Students are supported to express themselves, didactically and by the lecturer. The interactive training-setting combines theoretical and practical elements,. Students should be willing to participate actively and in a reflective manner.
Beside interchangeable contents, the “how” is essential for all parts of this training seminar: students learn process planning, group moderation, use of Metaplan techniques, and other demands typical in the organisational practice.

Open for 1st semester students and above, recommended for Sociology Bachelor students before their internship and thesis, as well as for Master students. Open to students of other faculties. As a training seminar limited to 20 participants.

2 SWS: Fortnightly, starting in the 2nd week of the term: Tuesdays 4-7 pm; 3 hours (s.t.!). Limited to 20 participants, therefore please register reliable via Stud.IP for your participation. After the start workshop, this training-group will be closed.

This course is a seminar that introduces students to the study of Sociology. Sociology is the study of the way institutions structure how individuals live as well as the way individuals structure those same institutions. It seeks to ask and examine questions like: What is a society? How have societies developed over time? How and why are different societies more or less equal? This course seeks to examine these questions in ways that provide an introduction to the field of sociology. It focuses on a broad range of theory and research showing how sociologists think about and study these questions.

We have three goals for this course. The first is to provide you with a general overview of the discipline of Sociology. We will explore various social phenomena and discuss the explanations and interpretations of these phenomena offered by sociologists. The second goal is to understand how to look at the social world with a sociological thinking. We will explore what makes sociology different from other types of sciences and how sociologists seek to understand the world. The third goal is to improve your ability to discuss scientific ideas in the common international language of modern scientific publication and discussion, which is English.
