Depending on the pandemic situation, the course will either take place online again or in the Simultaneous Design Laboratory (CEF) at DLR (Robert-Hooke-Str.7, Bremen)

The given dates are blocked time slots, only. The final dates are reduced/refined later.

Please be sure not to have any parallel exams during these given dates!

Das Projekt wird in Kooperation mit dem Arbeitsbereich Nachrichtentechnik (ANT) durchgeführt und betreut.

In order to develop a thrust control system for a model rocket - solid propellant engine a test stand shall be realized.

Tasks are:

  * 2D - OpenFoam study of different orifices
  * CAD - design of the test stand
  * Rapid prototyping of the test stand
  * Design of an Arduino based real time control and data acquisition system
  * Experimental data collection of different rocket motors
  * Implementation of project management

In 2011 the DLR Institute of Space Systems launched its research initiative called EDEN. The research initiative focuses on Bio-regenerative Life Support Systems (BLSS), especially greenhouse modules, and how these technologies can be integrated in future space habitats on Moon and Mars.
Within this project, the students shall create a business plan for a hypothetical start-up company, resulting from different projects of the DLR EDEN group. Therefore, adequate technology transfer strategies from idea to implementation shall be developed. Possible tasks are market analysis, SWOT analysis, market development strategies, prototype strategies, cost analysis and customer relationships investigations.
The business plan follows the general guidelines of the ESA BIC – ESA Space Incubator (https://esa-bic.de/). The DLR EDEN group offers the student group the full DLR infrastructure at the Institut of Space Systems, the EDEN partner network, and internal DLR resources (tbd).

The topic focuses on electro winning of metals and alloys from a typical Martian mineral, regolith, and the production of oxygen as a byproduct, without emitting greenhouse gasses or using fossil
fuels in any phase.
The following tasks are proposed for this Master's project:
1. Investigating various available regolith-like samples.
2. Systematic preparation of regolith pellets using the pressing-sintering method.
3. Characterization of the pellets in terms of porosity, morphology (SEM), mechanical (micro-hardness) and electrical (conductivity) properties.
4. Usage of an already existing set-up for high-temperature molten salt electrolysis and the self-prepared pellets for electrowinning, focusing on the impacts of the pellet-type and electrolyte composition on the results.
5. Characterization of the samples after the run using XRD analysis in order to determinethe current efficiency

Cyanobacteria may become central components in biological in situ resources utilization (ISRU) on Mars. Their cultivation will rely on a photobioreactor-based system, whose design and modelling are currently being worked upon. The project proposed here aims at contributing to the development of this system and to the assessment of its cost-efficiency (using equivalent system mass as a main metric) through a model-based systems engineering approach. The overall system will be considered but a higher focus will be given to the gas management subsystem.
