Masterarbeit: Identification of critical parameters in the performance of a segmented microbial electrolysis cell
Microbial Electrolysis Cells (MEC) could offer clean water and hydrogen, but the scaling up of such devices has not been as widely studied as it has been for other technologies.
In this work we are aiming to study the performance of a microbial electrolysis cell in a segmented system. For this, we will have to decide the segmentation concept of the mini-plant. We will control the performance by measuring the current production of the system, the organic acids, chemical oxygen demand (COD), and pH to fully characterize the reactor system. Previous knowledge of environmental engineering or chemistry would be advantageous.
In this sense, students will have the chance of learning and practicing concepts of environmental engineering and applying them for analysis of an electrochemical system.
Main objective:
Identify which parameters influence the performance of a segmented microbial electrolysis cell (length, flow, etc.)
Secondary objectives:
- Start and operate an MEC
- Measure the current production and COD removal
- Determine which design parameters have the largest influence on the performance of the MEC.
