Science meets industry cooperation Projects and career path in(to) the industry

MAPEX was the host of previous graduates from the University of Bremen for the 7^th MAPEX Early Career Research workshop. These graduates are now members of industry and presented details of their current employment focusing on roles in their employment, current research, current projects, and new and emerging technologies driven by science and technology. These presentations revealed that graduates of MAPEX members are working worldwide and have become leading experts in areas such as metallurgy, corrosion, numerical analysis and simulations, metal printing, advanced cosmetics, extreme high precision machining and tooling.Apart from learning about these areas of their employment, the audience was entertained by fascinating stories involving personal career progression and how to achieve this success. Many stories discussed how the community here at the University of Bremen was their introduction to their current and previous positions. The more than 50 participants actively listened and asked many questions regarding research, employment, and life after leaving university. Participants took great advantage of the time to ask further insight into professional and personal life beyond university life. Exchanges of business cards and ideas could be heard in all parts of the break room.In addition to the focus of this workshop, Charlotte Simmat and Wiltrud Hoffmann from the Bremen Business StartUp and Job Entry, presented the support services of the universities transfer unit such as BRIDGE and the job-oriented Mentoring-Programme “Fokus Berufseinstieg”. These paths detailed the possibilities of bringing current scientific research to industry via patenting and start-up possibilities (BRIDGE). Building bridges across the boarders defined by the faculties and institutes.

More than 40 young scientists from four faculties of the university met during the sixth edition of the MAPEX Early Career Researcher Workshop on 25 April 2018. The flashlight and keynote presentations provided a good basis for a lively interdisciplinary exchange between postdocs, PhD candidates, and master students during the poster sessions. Colleagues from the research services unit and the Bremen Early Career Researcher Development (BYRD) answered numerous questions regarding funding schemes for postdocs as well as the support of early-career researchers at the University of Bremen. With his plenary lecture on “Semiconductor nanostructures - smart probes for biological systems” Martin Eickhoff closed the official programme of the workshop. After a day full of scientific insights, some participants enjoyed a visit of the "Hafenrummel", testing their luck and skill on a course of fairground attractions of the 1950ies.

Science meets industry – spin-offs and cooperation projects

About 40 participants from the University of Bremen and Hochschule Bremen were highly impressed by the contributions presented at the 5^th MAPEX Early Career Researcher Workshop on 16 November 2017. According to the motto “spin-offs and cooperation projects” Meike Goos from the Knowledge and Technology Transfer Unit of the University of Bremen introduced possibilities for scientists to set up a business originating from Bremen’s universities. In vivid contributions, three spin-offs of the University of Bremen shared their experience packed full with anecdotes and practical recommendations how to bring your ingenious idea into a ready-to-sell product. The key message to take home from all three founders, Cord Winkelmann (sensosurf), Stefan Frehse (SCiLS), and John Schlasche (Additive Works), is “Talk to your customer!”

In the afternoon, the audience was taken onto an intriguing trip on how academic research and industrial development can work hand in hand. In two tandem talks, Arne Kunze from the Stiftung Institut für Werkstofftechnik (IWT) and Sabine Wagner (Form Tech GmbH) as well as Michael Brink from the Institute for Integrated Product Development (BIK) and Lars Ischtschuk (SAERTEX GmbH & Co. KG) presented successful examples for the workshop motto “science meets industry”.

A lively exchange between the presenters and the participants took place during the lunch break and coffee breaks. As a final highlight, the MAPEX speaker Lucio Colombi Ciacchi (Hybrid Materials Interfaces) closed the imposing day with a presentation of his own research, showing that the understanding of processes on the atomistic scale can push forward industrial development.

Within the 4th Early Career Researcher Workshop (formerly named Young Scientist Workshop) on May the 11th, 50 young scientist met in the TAB building to present and discuss their work and contribution to MAPEX. Beside three keynote presentations from Gerrit Dumstorff (FB1, IMSAS), Nils Ellendt (IWT, SFB1232) and Andrea Kirsch (FB2, CKfS) 20 master students, PhD candidates, and postdocs gave a short view on their work in a lightning presentation followed up by poster sessions. “It is interesting and exciting to see, what people are dealing with in their daily scientific work and how they actually define scientific work”, said one of the participants. Another participant praised the relaxed atmosphere, where‚ Master students, PHDs and Postdocs get together. A highlight of the workshop was the last presentation “Processes at fluid interfaces” by Mark Avila. The new Head of the ZARM gave an exciting insight into the scientific work of his group. The workshop finally ended in the city with a slightly different presentation: A night watchman lead the participants through the old city of Bremen, telling stories about the city by walking from the marketplace over the Schlachte to the Schnoor Viertel. Alltogether the workshop was again a successful event which will be continued in autumn with the 5th workshop, where people from industry will meet the MAPEX Early Career Researchers.

Science meets Industry - cooperation projects and career path in(to) the industry

Every seat was occupied for the 3^rd MAPEX Young Scientist Workshop that took place with more than 60 participants on 27^th September 2016. According to the motto “science meets industry” the programme was composed of career talks by representatives from BEGO Implant Systems GmbH & Co. KG, OHB System AG as well as tandem talks on cooperative projects held by a MAPEX member and a cooperation partner from industry (Daimler AG, ficonTec Service GmbH). The generous coffee breaks allowed for a lively exchange between the participants and the presenters from science and industry. A highlight was the plenary talk, which is traditionally given by a newly appointed professor in the MAPEX community: Anne Staubitz took the participants on a fascinating journey through her research “Synthesis as a Tool for Developing New Functional Materials”. The talk of MAPEX early career investigator Katharina Koschek from the Fraunhofer Institute for Manufacturing Technology and Advanced Materials IFAM on the “challenges and opportunities of fibre reinforced plastics” was a perfect introduction for the final excursion through the different departments of the IFAM. The day was rounded off by a dinner buffet and get together at the IFAM and later on in the Haus am Walde.

About 60 young scientists from the University of Bremen and Hochschule Bremen met on 11 April 2016 for the 2nd MAPEX Young Scientist Workshop in the science lounge of the TAB building. In 27 flash presentations master and PhD students advertised their research posters in front of the MAPEX early career investigators and their colleagues. The contributions were embedded in a frame work of key lectures from the MAPEX members Michael Fischer (FB5), Dirk Lehmhus (FB4) and Dorothea Brüggemann (FB1). Whereas Michael Fischer guided the audience into the world of “Atomistic Modelling of Porous Solids – From Fundamental Understanding to Applications”, Dirk Lehmhus discussed “Material- integrated intelligent systems: Challenges and Perspectives”. Dorothea Brüggemann started her talk “Materials science meets Biology: Synthetic cell systems” with the view of a physicist on biology: “What I cannot create, I do not understand!” (Richard Feynman).

As a high light, Prof. Fabio La Mantia, recently appointed at the faculty of Production Engineering (FB4) held the plenary lecture and introduced into “Novel aqueous zinc-ion battery on copper hexacyanoferrate for grid energy storage”.

Numerous enthusiastic discussions started during the poster sessions and were contunued during the blacklight minigolf match and the dinner. The young scientists summarized the workshop to be an excellent platform to get an overview on the research topics and techniques available at the University of Bremen and to get in contact with scientists from the other faculties.

For the 1st MAPEX Young Scientist Workshop 33 young scientists met in the LION building on 14 October 2015 invited by the MAPEX Early Career Investigators to

• bulid bridges across the boarders defined by faculties and institutes,
• get an overview about their research topics,
• to get to know who offers which expertise and measuring techniques,
• to find new cooperation partners,
• to build up a network of experts.
