Herrenhausen Konferenz

The New Role of the State for the Emergence and Diffusion of Innovation

Uwe Cantner (Friedrich-Schiller-Universität Jena, Deutschland), Dirk Fornahl (Universität Bremen, Deutschland) und Stefan Kuhlmann (Universität Twente, Niederlande) haben eine Herrenhäuser Konferenz zum Thema "The New Role of the State for the Emergence and Diffusion of Innovation" organisiert.

  • Session 1: Does innovation (policy) matter for (economic) growth?
  • Session 2: Societal Transitions and Grand Societal Challenges
  • Session 3: Multiple Roles of the State in Coping with Innovations
  • Session 4: Corporatism and Cooperation
  • Session 5: Policy Instruments to Support Innovative Changes
  • Session 6: Innovation Policy as Inclusive Strategy
  • Debate: "The role of the state is solely defined as curing market or system failures" vs. " Government shall not infringe upon market forces"
  • Interactive Debate: “How must innovation policy be balanced to deal with economic, ecological, societal and developmental issues?”

Session 3: Multiple roles for the state in coping with innovations

Which role(s) has the state to play in innovation policy in the future? This relates to the old debate on state vs. market or on centralized vs. decentralized planning or autoctratic vs. democratic decision making. In this context, we also need to reflect on what we mean by ‘state’ and ‘statehood’ in the 21st Century as well as new state dimensions such as ‘new publicness’, like in the sharing economy.
