1 x 0,66 Ph.D. position (f/m/d)

The UNIVERSITY OF BREMEN, Faculty 5 Geosciences and MARUM, is offering (under the condition of job release)

one Ph.D. position (f/m/d) for 3 years
in the area of Marine Geosciences for the project Sediment dynamics along the Argentinean and Uruguayan continental margin.

The position is limited to a term of 3 years. Salary and benefits are commensurate with the federal German employee scale TV-L 13 (66,6%). The employment is fixed-term and governed by the Act of Academic Fixed-Term Contract, §2 I (Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz – WissZeitVG). Therefore, candidates may only be considered for appointment if they still have the respective qualification periods available in accordance with § 2 (1) WissZeitVG.

The Argentinean and Uruguayan continental margin is strongly affected by oceanic currents that change the slope morphology and influence sediment transport from the continent to the deep sea. The sediment deposits formed by the action of bottom currents are commonly used as archives to reconstruct paleoceanographic changes, but associated processes need to be further investigated. This project aims to better characterise the sedimentary features, sediment distribution and the processes that control sediment dynamics along the Argentinean and Uruguayan continental slope, using mainly samples and data acquired during two oceanographic surveys carried out in 2009 and 2018 (RV Meteor Cruise M78/3 and RV Sonne Cruise SO260). The main objectives of the project are to: (i) analyse the present geomorphology and sedimentological characteristics of the margin using sediment cores in association with bathymetry and subsurface imaging; (ii) study the hydrodynamic conditions that may affect the continental slope using current measurements and hydrographic data; (iii) use a hydro-sedimentary numerical model to identify the oceanographic processes at the origin of the observed morphologies.

We seek an enthusiastic and dynamic researcher with a strong interest in Marine Geosciences and Oceanography.

The position includes teaching duties of 2 hour per week to assist during practical and laboratory exercises and/or field trips (also adapted for non-German speakers).

  • Master degree or Diploma in Geosciences, Marine Geosciences, Physical Geography or Oceanography
  • Experience in sedimentary and/or oceanographic processes
  • Basic knowledge in the interpretation of seismic and acoustic data
  • Desirable scientific programming skills with Matlab and FORTRAN
  • Ability and willingness to participate in offshore research expeditions
  • Fluent in English (written and spoken)

Please address enquiries to Prof. Dr. Elda Miramontes (emiramonprotect me ?!uni-bremenprotect me ?!.de).
Applications should include a CV, a list of publications, a statement describing research interests, the applicant’s research and technical background as they relate to the position, and contact information for three referees.

As the University of Bremen intends to increase the proportion of female employees in science, women are particularly encouraged to apply.

In case of equal personal aptitudes and qualification priority will be given to disabled persons.

Applications from scientists having an immigrant background as well as applications from international researchers are explicitly welcome.

Deadline for the application is 25.10.2019. Applications should be directed with the reference number A265/19 to
