The Center for Industrial Mathematics (ZeTeM) at the University of Bremen, Germany, is offering (under the condition of job release) at the earliest possible date a

3-year PhD position (f/m/d)

in the framework of the BMBF-funded project HYDAMO

Hybrid data-driven and model-based simulation of complex flow problems in the automotive industry

The position is fixed-term and governed by the Act of Academic Fixed-Term Contract, §2 I (Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz – WissZeitVG). Therefore, candidates may only be considered for appointment if they still have the respective qualification periods available in accordance with § 2 (1) WissZeitVG.

We seek an excellent, open-minded and team-spirited researcher. We are looking for a scientist interested in mathematical and statistical data analysis and machine learning, as well as in interdisciplinary scientific work and in applying mathematical methods to real-world problems. The candidate will be part of the Center for Industrial mathematics and Faculty of Mathematics & Computer Sciences.

HYDAMO is an interdisciplinary research project at the interface between data science, mathematical modeling and simulation, and applications in the automotive industry. The sub-project of University of Bremen will focus on parameter identification of complex nonlinear dependencies.

The HYDAMO consortium consists of the Center for Industrial Mathematics (ZeTeM) at the University of Bremen, the Technical University Kaiserslautern and the Fraunhofer ITWM in Kaiserlautern. Volkswagen AG (Wolfsburg) and Engineering System International (ESI, Neu-Isenburg) are involved as industrial partners.

The successful candidate is required to work in the described research project in close collaboration with the project partners. Moreover, the candidate is expected to pursue his/her scientific qualification, in particular pursuing a PhD in the related mathematical field of data-driven models and parameter identification.

Required skills and expertise

  • A master degree (or equivalent) in the field of applied mathematics, computer science or a closely related field
  • Experience in mathematical data analysis and machine learning
  • General programming skills, preferably in Python, R, and Matlab
  • Strong interest in interdisciplinary scientific work, in particular affinity with applications in the automotive industry
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Good knowledge in spoken and written English and/or German
  • Good communication skills, cooperation with national and international partners is required
