Although one enjoys a very high standard of living in Germany, the costs are still comparable to other countries in Western Europe. The cost of living depends mainly on your personal lifestyle and choice of accommodation. A student needs about 860 euros per month for accommodation and a modest, normal way of life. A cost of living analysis compiled by the consumer center Bremen can be found here (in German).
In Bremen, there are no tuition fees. But you do have to pay a semester contribution. The semester contribution includes: cost of the semester ticket, the "Studierendenwerk Bremen" (Student Welfare Services) contribution, the AstA contribution, and an administration fee. With the semester ticket you can use all public transport (streetcar, bus, train) in Bremen and in the surrounding area for six months. The Studierendenwerk finances social facilities such as the Mensa (which is the “student canteen”), cafeterias, student residences, sports facilities, etc. AstA (General Student Committee) is the student representation at the University of Bremen.
