Cost of living in Bremen

Although one enjoys a very high standard of living in Germany, the costs are still comparable to other countries in Western Europe. The cost of living depends mainly on your personal lifestyle and choice of accommodation. A student needs about 861 euros per month for accommodation and a modest, normal way of life. A cost of living analysis compiled by the consumer center Bremen can be found here (in German).

In Bremen, there are no tuition fees. But you do have to pay a semester contribution. The semester contribution includes: cost of the semester ticket, the "Studierendenwerk Bremen" (Student Welfare Services) contribution, the AstA contribution, and an administration fee. With the semester ticket you can use all public transport (streetcar, bus, train) in Bremen and in the surrounding area for six months. The Studierendenwerk finances social facilities such as the Mensa (which is the “student canteen”), cafeterias, student residences, sports facilities, etc. AstA (General Student Committee) is the student representation at the University of Bremen.

In the winter semester 2020/21 the semester contribution is 386,39 euro. Information on the current semester contribution can be found under: Reregistration & semester contribution.

Student finances

Students who are not EU citizens need a visa to enter Germany. In order to receive a student visa, you must provide evidence of having sufficient financing for a one-year stay in Germany. Currently this is 10,332 euros (as of 1st. January 2021). You also have to do this when you want to extend your stay.
For a shorter stay you must evidence the availability of correspondingly less funds.
