Appointment Process for Professors

The University of Bremen seeks to recruit and retain engage, highly motivated outstanding professors. Therefore high standards have to be applied to the appointment process to ensure quality, especially in respect of transparency, process duration, information flow and gender mainstreaming.

Professorships

The legislation on higher education in Bremen does not provide for chairs. Every individual professor enjoys a great deal of independence. The University of Bremen offers special introductory courses for newly appointed professors to facilitate their start in Bremen. But also long-established professors receive all kinds of support.

Tenure-Track & Juniorprofessorships

The University of Bremen introduces the true Tenure-Track, which replaces the Junior Professorship with a "Bremen Perspective". In 2017, it was one of the winners in the german "Bund-Länder-Programm for the Promotion of Young Scientists". The programme will support seven Tenure-Track professorships between 2018 and 2020.

Senior Researcher & Senior Lecturer

The University of Bremen is also continuing to develop its personnel structure in the academic mid-level. Permanent, scientifically independent positions - as Senior Researcher and Senior Lecturer - which can only be achieved through a tenure procedure, open up alternative career paths in addition to professorships.

Early Career Researcher

The University of Bremen supports young scientists during the PhD and postdoctoral phases and offers a wide range of support services. In addition, the university advises scientists on the transition to the non-university labour market.

Human Resources Strategy für Researchers (HRS4R)

With the application for the  EU “HR Excellence in Research”-Award, the University of Bremen starts an extensive quality assurance process on working conditions for scientists of all career levels.
